Town of Manchester

To help reduce landfill waste and support healthy local soils, the Town of Manchester is sponsoring a discount sale of backyard compost bins and accessories. The bins allow residents to turn yard trimmings and food scraps into a nutrient-rich soil amendment.

This sale is only happening online and your order must be picked up one day only: Saturday September 18th 2021. Place your order by September 16th to ensure availability.

Thank you for participating in this program, and remember pick-up is one day one - September 18th.

Why Compost?

Did you know more than half of what Manchester residents throw away can be composted? The benefits of composting range from saving money on trash bills, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, to growing healthy plants and using less water on landscapes. “Clay soil, common in the Manchester area, doesn’t absorb water quickly and often results in runoff. Adding a soil amendment like compost improves the soil structure and increases the rate of water infiltration – which also helps you use less water.”

Why Use a Rain Barrel?

,

There are several environmental benefits associated with rain barrels. Rain barrels reduce storm water runoff, water that does not soak into the ground and can transport many pollutants to our local waterways as well as cause erosion. By collecting rainwater for watering lawns, gardens, and potted plants and for washing off patio furniture and tools, rain barrels conserve water. From a gardening perspective, the natural nutrients in rain water make it far better than city tap water, which contains chlorine and fluoride. With a rain barrel, gardeners can minimize or eliminate their use of chemical fertilizers.

Rain barrel water should not be used to drink or bathe. And rain barrels should be emptied and stored throughout the winter months.
